Abstract

With the dramatic prevalence of coronas and the reduction of mourning ceremonies for the deceased or their complete abolition, and the transfer of as many of these mourning rituals to cyberspace as possible, This problem arose for the researcher, to what extent have the survivors of the deceased been able to gain a sense of sympathy and healing for their lost loved one through the virtual condolences of relatives; and is cyberspace basically a good platform for these types of mirrors or not? To find the answer, focusing on the ritual and communication aspects of this phenomenon, 19 people who have lost a loved one since the beginning of the corona outbreak were interviewed online. The results were included in two main categories: "Changes in mourning rituals as an opportunity" and "Changes in mourning rituals as a threat. "It seems that the spiritual dimensions of the mourning rituals for the deceased, who had already become very dim, become more prominent. It is an advantage manifested by the ritual changes of the Corona; In addition to such an advantage, depression due to not evacuating emotions, disbelief in the death of the deceased and the dominance of loneliness, despite expressing virtual sympathies, are among the injuries. Which over time can have a profound effect on the souls of mourners. Therefore, according to the results of these interviews, cyberspace was not considered a suitable platform to share the grief of mourners. According to the theory of ritual communication, it can be said that these ritualized mourning rituals of the media, although they can overcome the presence dimension of the ritual. And provide conditions for the expression of absentee sympathy, but still cannot be a substitute for face-to-face mourning rituals.
